What is a battery management system and how does it work?

The battery management system, or BMS for short, is the brain of a battery. This monitors the state of the battery by means of temperature, voltage and current sensors. This continuously informs the BMS and thus calculates, for example, the state of charge or the maximum power that is currently possible. These values are passed on by the BMS to the vehicle control system. The BMS also monitors the insulation, balances the cell voltages with each other or logs data.
