The “Swiss army knife” for fast charging for five charging standards now charges at up to 1000 volts. The Swiss company Designwerk Technologies AG, a leading expert in electromobility, will present the most compact version of its mobile DC fast charger family “MDC” at the most important European trade fair for charging infrastructure, Power2Drive, in May 2025 and herald the start of sales.
The MDC 22-920 with 21 kilowatts and up to 1000 volts output is tailor-made for professional use in garages, car dealerships and development departments. Vehicle developers and engineers at major car and truck manufacturers have been relying on the predecessor models for years. Their most important requirements: They must be mobile, compact and flexible. The new, fourth generation weighs in at 39 kg without the cable and enables flexible use on site thanks to the customized trolley. With the appropriate cables, the device charges within a range of 13 meters without having to change the power source. The device is often used as a supplement or backup to the wallbox. With the floor or wall mount, the MDC can also be used as a fixed charging infrastructure in the electric vehicle fleet. The quick charger becomes a Swiss army knife thanks to the simple change of cable/plug combinations and thus the charging standards.
While uniform charging plugs have long been the standard for cell phones, the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles remains fragmented globally. Tesla’s NACS dominates in the USA, GB/T in China and Europe relies on CCS Type 2. Nissan, Mitsubishi and Kia continue to use CHAdeMO in their markets.
This diversity forces European car manufacturers to equip export models with the appropriate charging connections. Instead of relying on different chargers, major OEMs rely on this flexible solution from Designwerk Technologies: the mobile DC fast charger supports five charging standards – CCS Type 1, CCS Type 2, CHAdeMO, GB/T and NACS. The device’s software recognizes the cable. Changing the charging standard is therefore possible without tools.
“We have set the bar high with the MDC 22-920. Our device combines the advantages of a mobile solution with the challenges of different charging standards. And in the smallest of spaces! Operation is uniquely simple. Unplug it, plug in another plug and you can charge with a different charging standard,” says Thorben Maier – Head of Sales and Customer Service Charging Technology at Designwerk, summing up the unique selling point of the mobile charging solution.
