Four charging solutions for the challenges of electromobility in transport logistics

October 28, 2024 – High installation costs for charging infrastructure, limited electricity grid capacities and dealing with large vehicle fleets require flexible and efficient solutions. Added to this are the often long downtimes, which can slow down operations and cause costs. As the logistics industry increasingly switches to electric vehicles, many transport companies are facing new challenges. To meet these challenges, Designwerk Technologies AG offers customized charging technologies that are specifically tailored to the needs of transport logistics. We present four innovative solutions that Designwerk Technologies AG has developed for transportation companies:

#1
Your challenge: Limited space and power capacities
Our solution: Overnight Charging – Tailor-made solutions for your depot
The overnight charging solution from Designwerk Technologies AG is a space-saving solution for transport companies that have limited truck parking spaces and grid connections. With this solution, existing truck parking spaces can be used. Using a truss construction and our compact MDC44-920 DC fast chargers, several vehicles can be charged simultaneously overnight without taking up additional space. With a charging capacity of 42 kW per vehicle to be charged, up to 420 kWh can be charged in 10 hours. This ensures that the fleet is fully operational again the next morning, which contributes to a significant reduction in downtime. The traverse design also makes it possible to implement the system without significant civil engineering costs.

#2
Your challenge: Using your own electricity and downtimes
Our solution: Opportunity charging – charging on demand

Opportunity charging from Designwerk offers a flexible solution. The combination of storage and charging solution makes it possible to charge vehicles as required and independently of public power grids or fixed times of day. The battery buffer can be used to store up to 2 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity from the company’s own photovoltaic systems or the power grid during the day. This allows charging processes of up to 1.4 MW to be carried out around the clock. The battery buffer prevents large load peaks and ensures stability in the power grid. Heavy e-trucks with a battery capacity of 740 kWh, for example, can be charged in just 35 minutes. This minimizes downtimes and enables operations to be resumed quickly, even when required at short notice. The system is equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) and Mega Charging System (MCS) charging standards. This enables current use with high-power charging and ensures conformity with future vehicles with MCS charging ports for megawatt charging.

#3

Your challenge: When handling goods, vehicles spend long periods of time at the dock.
Our solution: Dock charging – efficient use of downtimes

The dock charging solution from Designwerk Technologies AG makes optimum use of this time to charge the vehicle batteries. The trucks can be loaded during the charging process, which also saves time. A central power unit supplies the mobile DC fast chargers with power, which can be used at the individual ramps as required. They are only positioned on the e-truck when the e-truck is at the ramp. In contrast to permanently installed satellite charging stations, our mobile solution does not require any civil engineering work, which significantly reduces installation costs. In addition, the mobile solution prevents the frequent collisions between e-trucks and stationary satellite charging stations when maneuvering. Depending on your charging requirements, mobile DC fast chargers with 44 or 88 kilowatts of charging power and up to 1000 volts can be used and the high-voltage battery systems of your vehicles can be charged in a battery-friendly manner

#4
Your challenge: Different requirements in terms of number of charging points, charging time and duration
Our solution: all-in-one charging solutions – flexibility and cost efficiency

For companies that require maximum flexibility, Designwerk offers all-in-one charging solutions that combine different charging technologies. They make it possible to adapt the charging power to specific needs, whether for fast, high-power or megawatt charging. The use of battery-buffered mega-chargers reduces dependence on the public power grid and avoids costly grid reinforcements. This solution offers a high degree of flexibility in terms of charging speed and duration and combines the advantages of all the charging solutions mentioned above, making the overall operation significantly more efficient.

Conclusion

With its innovative charging technologies, Designwerk Technologies AG offers a wide range of solutions that can be adapted to the specific requirements of transport logistics companies. Whether it’s charging overnight, making efficient use of idle times during goods handling or reducing construction costs with flexible mobile solutions – Designwerk enables transport companies to make the transition to electromobility efficiently and cost-effectively.
